Civil services / Policy
Run public administration, police, or foreign service work after UPSC CSE or a state PSC. Any graduate degree is eligible. The exam is the bottleneck; the job is field + file work, not a classroom.
Salary outlook
Indicative (7th Pay Commission): entry IAS/IPS basic ~₹56,100/month plus allowances (roughly ₹10–12 LPA total early on), rising with seniority; government housing, and other perks add significant value beyond cash pay.

Typical path in India
- 1Finish any disciplined UG (arts, science, engineering, law — all work).
- 2Build GS + optional subject depth; a newspaper + standard books beat coaching-only prep.
- 3UPSC CSE: Prelims → Mains → Personality test. Age and attempt limits apply.
- 4State PSC (PCS, Group 1) as a parallel plan — similar syllabus, more seats.
- 5First posting is often sub-divisional / field; later roles depend on service and cadre.
Skills that matter
- Reading stamina and answer-writing
- Current affairs with actual understanding, not clips
- Honesty about 1–2 years of full-time prep risk
Who this fits
- You care about public systems more than a fast private-sector salary
- You can handle delayed, uncertain results
- You have a fallback job or degree that still has value if CSE takes time
Watch-outs
- Do not skip a real UG or job ‘only for UPSC’ without a money plan.
- Coaching is optional; a second attempt with no skill outside GS is a weak backup.
