Study Abroad — a starter guide for Indian students

Studying overseas is a 12–18 month project that mixes academics, finances, visas, and personal fit. Use this page as a map — it won't replace an advisor, but it will help you ask the right questions before you commit ₹30 L+ and two years of your life.

Start with why

Be honest — is it research, migration, job market, or a specific mentor? Your answer changes the country shortlist.

Know your budget

Total cost = tuition + living + travel + insurance. Tier your list into dream, target, safe — by cost AND admission odds.

Plan the exit

Post-study work visa and PR pathways matter as much as admission. Check latest rules — they change every cycle.

How Indian students fund it

  • Education loans — HDFC Credila, Avanse, SBI Global Ed-Vantage, Axis, Prodigy Finance (non-collateral for top schools).
  • University aid — merit scholarships, graduate assistantships (TA/RA), tuition waivers.
  • External scholarships — Chevening, Fulbright, DAAD, Inlaks, JN Tata Endowment.
  • Part-time work — 20 hrs/week on-campus is standard in most study destinations.

Before you sign up with an agent

  • • Ask whether they charge you, the university, or both — and how much.
  • • Verify universities yourself on the country's official accreditation site.
  • • Never hand over original documents or make tuition payments through an agent's account.
  • • If the pitch is "guaranteed visa" or "100% admission" — walk away.
