Design (Product / UX)

Shape how products, apps, clothes, or spaces look and work. Portfolios decide internships. NID, IIT (UCEED), NIFT and private design schools are the usual Indian routes.

Salary outlook

Indicative: fresh designers ₹3.5–7 LPA; NID/IIT design graduates and strong portfolios ₹8–16 LPA; senior/UX lead roles ₹18–35+ LPA. Portfolio and specialisation matter more than the degree tag.

Indicative ranges. Actuals vary by city, employer, specialisation and years of experience.

Typical path in India

  1. 1Build a sketch / digital portfolio through Class 11–12 — this is not optional.
  2. 2UCEED (IIT B.Des), NID DAT (NID campuses), NIFT Entrance (fashion / related).
  3. 3B.Des or BFA (4 years); some also enter via CUET into university design programmes.
  4. 4Internships and a public portfolio (Behance, case studies) before final year.

Skills that matter

  • Visual thinking and critique
  • Basic tools (Figma, Adobe, or hand drawing — pick a lane and go deep)
  • Talking about why a design choice exists, not only how it looks

Who this fits

  • You already make things for fun — sketches, edits, crafts, UI clones
  • You can take feedback without treating it as a personal attack

Watch-outs

  • ‘Designer’ is not one job: UX, graphic, fashion and product have different exams and pay.
  • Private design colleges vary wildly — judge by faculty and placed seniors, not ads.

Where to study

Most design (product / ux) pathways start in the Management & Commerce stream.

Related careers in Creative

  • Filmmaker / Cinematographer

Tell stories on screen — direction, camera, editing, or sound. Most people start with a media UG plus a reel, then specialised film school or assistant work.
