Doctor / Surgeon

Diagnose, treat, and follow patients over years of training. MBBS is 5.5 years including internship; most specialists then do NEET-PG. The work is clinical, shift-heavy, and tightly regulated.

Typical exams

Salary outlook

Indicative: junior resident / MBBS ₹6–12 LPA; post-MD/MS specialists ₹12–25 LPA; established private-practice specialists and surgeons often ₹25 LPA and above. Government scales add allowances; rural postings carry incentives.

Indicative ranges. Actuals vary by city, employer, specialisation and years of experience.

Typical path in India

  1. 1Class 11–12: PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) is required for NEET-UG.
  2. 2Entrance: NEET-UG is the national door for MBBS, BDS and many AYUSH seats.
  3. 3Counselling: All India Quota plus your state quota — know domicile and bond rules early.
  4. 4MBBS (4.5 years + 1 year internship), then NEET-PG for MD/MS if you specialise.
  5. 5Registration with the National Medical Commission / state medical council before independent practice.

Skills that matter

  • Long-term memory and exam stamina
  • Calm under messy, emotional situations
  • Comfort with biology and chemistry, not just ‘wanting to help’

Who this fits

  • You can commit 8–10 years if you want a speciality
  • You are okay with night duties and delayed earnings
  • Science marks are realistically in the NEET conversation, or you have a backup (BDS, BPT, nursing, B.Pharm)

Watch-outs

  • Private MBBS fees can cross ₹1 crore — treat that as a career-defining loan, not a default.
  • A bond of 1–2 years of rural service is common in several states.

Where to study

Most doctor / surgeon pathways start in the Medical (MBBS, AYUSH, Allied) stream.
