Civil Aviation — every entry scheme

Indian aviation is one of the world's fastest growing markets — over 1,500 aircraft are on order. Below are the DGCA / AAI / airline routes into flying, engineering, air traffic, cabin, ground ops and management, with eligibility, training cost/time and licences.

Regulatory bodies you should know

  • DGCA — pilot / AME / FOO / drone licences and airline certification.
  • AAI — airports, ATC, CNS-ATM infrastructure; recruits Junior Executives (ATC / Electronics).
  • BCAS — aviation security (AVSEC) training and certification.
  • MoCA — Ministry of Civil Aviation, policy and schemes like UDAN.

After 10th

Drone Pilot — Remote Pilot Certificate

Eligibility
Age 18+, 10th pass, medically fit. No prior flying experience required.
Training
5–7 day course at a DGCA-approved Remote Pilot Training Organisation (RPTO) covering regulations, nav, meteo, practical flight.
Licence / certification
DGCA Remote Pilot Certificate (class: Small / Medium / Large).
Careers
Survey & mapping, agri-spraying, infra inspection, cinematography, logistics pilot projects.

After 12th

Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL)

Eligibility
12th with Physics + Maths (≥ 50% usually). Age 17+. Medical Class-1 from DGCA-approved examiner.
Training
DGCA-approved Flying Training Organisation (FTO) — minimum 200 flying hours + ground school (Air Nav, Meteo, Regs, Tech General/Specific, Radio Telephony).
Licence / certification
DGCA subject exams → Student Pilot Licence (SPL) → Private Pilot Licence (PPL) → Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL).
Careers
First Officer with scheduled airlines (IndiGo, Air India, Akasa, Vistara, SpiceJet) → Captain after hours/command upgrade.

Cost in India ₹35–55 lakh; add type rating (A320 / B737) ₹15–25 lakh separately.

Integrated B.Sc. Aviation + CPL

Eligibility
12th PCM ≥ 50%; Class-1 medical; entrance by the host institute.
Training
3-year degree programme combining flying hours + DGCA papers + aviation management modules.
Licence / certification
CPL + B.Sc. degree on completion.
Careers
Airline First Officer; degree helps with ground roles and overseas conversions.

Indian Air Force — Flying Branch (for context)

Eligibility
NDA (12th PCM) or CDS/AFCAT after graduation → AFSB + PABT + medical.
Training
Flying training at AFA Dundigal, 1.5–2 years.
Licence / certification
Commissioned as Flying Officer; military flying is not a civil licence but the logged hours / experience help civilian conversion later.
Careers
Fighter / transport / helicopter pilot.

Not strictly civil aviation but a zero-cost route to becoming a pilot.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME)

Eligibility
12th PCM ≥ 50% (some institutes accept diploma in mech/electrical/electronics).
Training
2-year DGCA-approved AME course (CAR-147 BST) in Mechanical (B1.1/B1.3) or Avionics (B2) stream at an approved institute.
Licence / certification
After course: appear for DGCA module exams + 2 yrs approved maintenance experience → DGCA AME Licence (CAR-66).
Careers
AME in airlines / MROs; sign off airworthiness. Strong long-term career; demand growing with MRO hubs.

Cabin Crew / Flight Attendant

Eligibility
12th pass (graduation preferred); English fluency; height ≥ 155 cm (female) / 170 cm (male) typical; age 18+.
Training
Airline-specific 6–10 week training (safety, medical aid, service, grooming, emergency drills).
Licence / certification
Airline in-house certification + DGCA-approved cabin crew syllabus.
Careers
Cabin crew → Senior / Lead → Cabin Supervisor → In-flight Manager / Trainer.

Eligibility
12th PCM; JEE Main / Advanced / state CET.
Training
4-year B.Tech in Aerospace / Aeronautical (IITs Bombay, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Madras; IIST Thiruvananthapuram; MIT Manipal; PEC, etc.).
Licence / certification
Engineering degree; follow up with AME / GATE / ISRO RAC.

Air Traffic Controller (AAI Junior Executive ATC)

Eligibility
B.Sc (Physics + Maths) / B.E / B.Tech in Electronics / Telecom / IT / Electrical / Radio Engg. Age ≤ 27.
Training
Selected through AAI's Junior Executive (ATC) recruitment; induction training at CATC Allahabad / NIAMAR Delhi.
Licence / certification
AAI-issued ATC rating + ICAO level-4 English.
Careers
ATC at all major Indian airports / en-route control centres.

Eligibility
Graduate in any stream (aviation / management preferred).
Training
MBA / PGDM in Aviation Management (e.g. GITAM, Amity, IIAAS, Frankfinn) — 1–2 years.

Degree based; no DGCA licence required.

Airline Dispatcher / Flight Operations Officer (FOO)

Eligibility
12th with Maths + Physics (or graduate). Age 21+.
Training
DGCA-approved FOO / dispatcher course (~6 months) — meteorology, navigation, performance, ATC procedures.
Licence / certification
DGCA Flight Dispatcher Licence after exams + on-the-job training.
Careers
Operations control centre (OCC) at airlines, flight planning, weight & balance.
